Farm to City 23: Dartmoor to You!

Farm to City: Dartmoor to You! This event takes Dartmoor to London! 6th – 10th June 2023

From the 6th to the 10th of June, Shallowford Farm (a Charitable Trust providing residential farming experiences for young people from inner city areas) will be setting up a pop up farm in London near Clapham Junction!

In partnership with Providence House Youth Club, Farming in Protected Landscapes, Dartmoor National Park Authority, Foundation for Common Land, Peatland Partnership, Butterfly Conservation London, Red Tractor, Art and Energy and Wandsworth and Richmond Council; Shallowford Farm will provide an educational and tactile experience where people can meet a range of livestock including cows, pigs and sheep, talk to Dartmoor farmers, learn about the history and importance of commons, discover why butterflies are such important pollinators, experience the senses of Dartmoor National Park, uncover the beauty and importance of mosses in fighting climate change and much more!

So far, 1,200 young people and other community members are booked to attend this event which hopes to showcase the relationship between farming and conservation, and to demonstrate the importance and beauty of the UK’s wild spaces including Dartmoor National Park.

It is hoped that this event will not only bring those who attend closer to farming and nature, but that it will also draw connections between the beloved commons of London and Dartmoor with the help of Foundation for Common Land;

At the heart of England’s most loved and visited places are commons. A £3 million project, ‘Our Common Cause: Our Upland Commons’ is working hard to secure their future, supported by National Lottery Heritage Fund. The focus is on 12 commons, including three in Dartmoor, and demonstrating that common land is vital for nature, archaeology, climate, wetlands, trees and our access, alongside livestock production.” Tamsin Thomas – Project Officer Dartmoor.

This event will be open to booked school groups from Tuesday to Friday, but will be open to the public free of charge on Saturday 10th June from 10am until 4pm with no booking necessary. If you just so happen to be in London, we would love to see you there!
